Workers' Compensation for Contractors

Workers' compensation is designed to provide benefits to employees who are injured on the job, as defined by state law and the policy. Most states require it once you have employees, and many general contractors require proof of it from their subcontractors.

What it may help with

Subject to the actual policy or bond form, its terms, limits, and exclusions.

  • Medical care and wage replacement benefits for employees with work-related injuries, as provided under state law.
  • Employer's liability coverage, which is typically included as a separate part of the policy.
  • Meeting contract requirements that call for proof of workers' compensation and, where available, a waiver of subrogation.

Keep in mind

  • Premium is usually based on payroll by job classification. Accurate payroll and duties matter — misclassification can lead to an unexpected audit bill.
  • Uninsured subcontractors may be counted as your employees at audit in many states. Collect certificates from every sub.
  • Owner and officer inclusion or exclusion rules vary by state and entity type.
  • Rules, requirements, and available options differ by state. Some states use monopolistic state funds.

Questions we'll review with you

  • How many employees do you have, and what does each group do?
  • What is your estimated annual payroll, split by type of work if possible?
  • How much do you spend on subcontractors, and do they carry their own coverage?
  • Do you have current loss runs from your existing carrier?

Coverage availability, eligibility, limits, and pricing are subject to underwriting and policy terms. Requesting a quote does not bind coverage.
